How to choose the right DJ for your Wedding Entertainment

We know Your wedding is one of the most important days in your life. To help you make an informed choice about your wedding entertainment, we have given below some impartial advice on how to choose the right DJ for your wedding reception.

A reputable DJ should offer the following:

PLI (Public Liability Insurance) certificates,

PAT (Portable Appliance Tested) certificates,

ProDub Licence If using a computer to play music or Karaoke,

Contract/Agreement A legal agreement to attend,

Receipts/Invoice for Deposits/fees,

Refunds per Contract/Agreement,

Backup DJ's for emergency cover,

Easily Contactable by phone, post, email, website,

More things to look for

The DJ - Member of a reputable governing body

Disco - Provides option to choose music in advance, Provides several light effects, Will liaise with your venue and you on the agenda, and any Live Entertainment,

Karaoke - Have more than 1 singer at once, and clean up to date song lists,

What is PLI why have it?PLI insurance is a must in case of mishaps caused by your DJ or their equipment.

PLI cover provides reassurance that should anything unforeseen happen during your event, then any resulting damage costs will be covered by your DJ's PLI, subject to the terms and conditions of their insurance.

A reputable DJ will have Public Liability insurance.

Some venues will not allow a DJ to perform, if they do not have PLI insurance.
What is PAT why have it?A current PAT (Portable Appliance Test) certificate proves your DJ has had their equipment PAT tested.

Sight of this certificate assures you that your DJ's equipment is safe and sound and conforms to Health & Safety requirements.

A PAT certificate may also be a requirement of the DJ's PLI terms and conditions and is also required by some venues.
What is ProDub why have it?A ProDub certificate proves your DJ has the necessary MCPS/PPL licence to allow them to play digital music - that is playing music or karaoke from computer/laptop.

It is illegal to play digital music without this licence.

A ProDub License may also be a requirement of the venue you are using.
Contract/Agreement?A Contract or Agreement with your DJ, that clearly shows the dates and times of attendance, with details of the service to be provided, will help assure you that should the DJ not turn up, or not provide what was agreed, then you could

A. Obtain a refund of fees paid
B. The cost of an alternative DJ

These are just a couple of examples, but the point is you have recourse to a Court of Law for compensation if necessary.
Why have back-up DJ's?It's helpful to have a back-up in case of emergencies, which do happen. This ensures you receive a DJ for your event, and the service you requested.
Member of a governing body?When your DJ is a member of a governing body, it means they are obliged to abide by the code and conduct of that organisation.

No member wants clients complaining to their governing body.

Advice if using the Venue DJ

Do I have to use the Venue DJ?No

Venues do try to insist you use their DJ, by insisting your DJ has and produces evidence of the following:

PLI certificates,
PAT certificates,
ProDub Licence.

Why not use the Venue DJ?You should be aware that the venue DJ is employed by the venue, not yourselves, so ultimately their responsibility is primarily to the venue.

To the venue DJ, your event is just one of many so there is likely to be less consideration of your specific needs.

You won't know who the DJ is, or how good they may be, until you arrive, at which point you have no choice in the matter.

You may not be able to liaise with the DJ prior to the event, so it's likely that you will have only a limited influence on the choice of music played.

Using your own DJ will give you control over all these factors and they will feel much more responsible towards you, as you are employing them directly.
Can I insist I use my own DJ?YES

You are the client, paying the venue for using their facilities, and it's very unlikely they will want to lose your business by insisting you use their DJ.

The venue is likely to make a large amount of profit from your use of their facilities.

The profit from using their DJ is insignificant in comparison to the profit on using the facilities, therefore venues will concede to your requirements.
Why use my own DJ?A DJ employed directly by you will have an elevated sense of responsibility towards you and have a greater desire to satisfy you than one employed by the venue.

You will know who the DJ is and you will be able to determine your choice of music in advance.

You will be able to liaise (in advance) with your DJ about your agenda for the event

You will be able to determine the choice of lighting effects and any other extras for your event.

You will be 'in control' of your entertainment by using 'Your Own DJ'

If you have hired a reputable DJ with all the necessary credentials, they will have a reputation to uphold, therefore likely to provide a more personal and professional service.


Unless you know the DJ, it's safer to book a reputable DJ/Provider. Only then are you assured of quality and an enjoyable end to your day.

DJ hire for your Wedding represents only a small portion of the total budget, but is actually one of the most important.
The DJ will be spending more time with you and your guests than any other professional hired for the wedding event.


If you want your party to be a success, the choice of DJ is important.
Choosing the wrong DJ could result in:

No DJ at all

Wrong or No Music

Poor or No Sound

Little or No lights

Small Karaoke choice

No Karaoke at all

You & Guests bored

Your day ruined

For special events like Weddings a good DJ is a 'Must Have'.
